Course Description: With Joy Hakim’s History of US, we will travel back in time from the Chinese Dynasties across the Bering Strait to discover who were the first Americans. Learning about potlatches, totem poles, wampum belts, Vikings, Aztecs, conquistadors, pirates to native Americans, then traveling with John Smith in shackles to explore Virginia. Discover that one of Chief Powhatan’s brothers received a “Spanish” education but became very “homesick” for his family. From colonies to a country, with a tea party or two thrown in along the way – come learn about our country’s early history.
This course is designed to be a highly “hands-on” class. The students will make many projects in class and develop not only an understanding of history but also an understanding of its people. Class work will be made into a portfolio.
