Course Description: In this class we will study the history of American media, ethical
principles, media’s role and responsibilities, and recognizing bias and propaganda, along with fake news. We will cover the interview process, writing and editing news leads, headlines, feature stories, sports stories, editorials, and columns. How advertising influences and plays a role in our society will also be studied and students will produce their own commercials. Periodically, we will be producing our school newsletter, The Southside Scoop. Students will need to understand the importance of contributing written articles and the significance of meeting deadlines. A possible field trip and guest speaker may be scheduled.
